What You Need to Know About Contractors LicenseContractors provide construction, repair, remodeling, or services involved in creating changes to land and/or buildings. In general, licenses are needed for the following activities: Commercial contracting, residential contracting, plumbing, electrical work, HVAC, gas, low voltage, asbestos/hazardous waste remediation, etc. Some states determin which jobs require licenses by evaluating the total cost of the job including labor and materials. Other states regulate commercial contractors but not those engaged in residential/home improvements. Meanwhile, some states require licensing while others require registration so that they have information on file for people doing this type of work within their jurisdiction.
